Turn a voice note into to-dos and calendar events

Record a voice note in the Mapa chat, or add one you saved from another app. Mapa writes down what you said and saves the events and to-dos.

Short answer

Tap the mic in the Mapa chat and say it the way you’d tell the other parent: “Dentist Tuesday at 3:30 PM for Sam, and remind me to buy goggles tomorrow.” Mapa turns your voice into text and saves the event and the to-do straight away, and you can undo either one. You can also add a voice message you saved from another app, such as WhatsApp.

What goes in

Example: a voice note recorded on Wed, Oct 14, written out

“Dentist Tuesday at 3:30 PM for Sam, and remind me to buy goggles tomorrow.”

What Mapa saves from it

From the example. Days count from the day you record, and “Tuesday” means the coming one.

  • Event: Dentist for Sam · Tue, Oct 20 · 3:30 PM
  • To-do: Buy goggles · Thu, Oct 15
  • Your words, written out in the chat, so you can check what Mapa heard

How it works

  1. Open the Mapa chat and tap the mic. Talk for up to 5 minutes, then tap Stop.
  2. Play it back if you like, then send. Mapa turns the recording into text, and for a note you record in the chat, it keeps the words, not the audio.
  3. Mapa saves the events and to-dos it hears. Undo anything that’s off.
  4. Got a voice message somewhere else? Save it to your phone as a file, then add it in the chat like a photo. On iPhone, Voice Memos can export a recording to Files as an .m4a file.

Why talk instead of type

Speaking is fast. In a 2016 lab study on an iPhone, people entered short English messages about 2.9 times faster by voice than by keyboard: 153 words a minute against 52.

The same study found speech left a few more errors in the final text. So glance at the words Mapa heard before you put the phone away.

What it won’t do

  • Listen for a wake word. Mapa hears you when you tap the mic, and not otherwise.
  • Start a recording on its own. Every recording starts with your tap.
  • Take long recordings in the chat. Notes stop at 5 minutes; record a second one if you need more.
  • Get every name right. Kids’ names and noisy kitchens trip up any transcription, so check the text.
  • Connect to WhatsApp. Mapa hears the voice messages you save and add yourself.

Questions parents ask

What can I say in a voice note to Mapa?

Say it the way you’d tell the other parent: the day, the time, the kid and the job. Mapa saves the events and to-dos it hears, and you can undo any of them.

Can I send Mapa a WhatsApp voice message?

Yes, once it’s saved on your phone as a file. Add the file in the Mapa chat the way you’d add a photo. Mapa doesn’t connect to WhatsApp.

What if Mapa hears it wrong?

Your words show up as text, so you can check them. Fix or undo anything Mapa saved.

Does Mapa understand “tomorrow” and “Tuesday”?

Yes. Mapa counts days from today and takes the coming one, so “Tuesday” means the next Tuesday. A time like “at 5” is read as 5 PM.
