Fambot vs Mapa: inbox connection or forwarding?

Fambot connects to your Gmail and texts you a plan each evening. Mapa only sees what you forward. Here’s how to choose between them.

Short answer

Pick Mapa if you’d rather choose what an app sees. It has no inbox connection: you forward school emails or snap forms, and every job gets one adult’s name, with reminders for the adults involved. Fambot connects to your Gmail and Google Calendar with read-only access and texts you a plan for the next day.

The real choice: a connection or forwarding

With a connection, you set it up once and the app keeps reading. Nothing waits on you to forward it. The trade-off is that the app has read access to your Gmail, so it can find the school emails among everything else.

With forwarding, the app sees nothing until you send it something. It takes a few seconds per email, and you decide what goes in.

Neither is wrong. It comes down to how you feel about inbox access, and whether the school emails land in Gmail at all.

Paper matters too. Fambot is built around email and your calendar. Mapa also takes photos and PDFs in the chat, for the slip in the backpack and the vaccine card in the drawer.

How Fambot works

You sign up with Google and connect your Gmail and Google Calendar. Fambot uses secure, read-only access to find what matters for your kids: early dismissal, sign-ups closing soon, what to bring and what to wear.

Each evening, Fambot texts you a plan for tomorrow. You can reply to ask questions or add things to your calendar. It also gives you a backpack check for each kid and a look at the week ahead.

It works with Gmail and Google Calendar today. Its FAQ says Outlook and Apple Calendar are on the roadmap, and Outlook and iCloud users can join an early-access list. Its App Store listing names more connections, so check their site for what works now.

Fambot says it never sends emails for you, never edits your calendar without your permission and doesn’t let assistant providers train their models on your data. If you disconnect, it erases your account.

It has apps for iPhone and Android, plus a web app. It’s free while in beta, and it plans a free tier and a paid tier later.

Choose Mapa if…

  • You don’t want any app reading your inbox.
  • Your school emails land in Outlook, iCloud or another account you can forward from.
  • A lot of your paperwork is paper: slips, flyers and the vaccine card.
  • You want one adult’s name on every job, and the adults involved reminded before it’s due.
  • You want Mapa to ask before it changes a plan when the school moves a date.

  • You’d rather not forward anything.
  • You like one text each evening with tomorrow’s plan.

What Mapa doesn’t do

  • Read your inbox. You forward what you want it to see.
  • Read attachments in a forwarded email. Snap or upload them in the chat.
  • Text you a daily plan. Reminders come by email or phone notification.
  • Run as a native iPhone or Android app yet.
  • Sync with Google Calendar yet. It’s built and being tested; Mapa has its own shared calendar and can export an .ics file.
  • Connect to school apps like ParentSquare, ClassDojo or Remind.
